The Great List {8.16.13}

This week flew by! With the Carson-lack-of-weight-gain ordeal it was more difficult to write this list than most weeks, BUT these are the kind of weeks I need this list the most!

It wasn't all bad, or bad at all, really.

1. I have been waiting for Leila to be ready for board games! We tried playing Candy Land twice so far and she lasted a total of 10 minutes each time. It's a start! She likes to choose which card she gets and doesn't quite understand how to follow the "road". She did great with taking turns though! It will only get better from here.

2. Carson has been only waking up one time at night since we started supplementing after nursing sessions. Awesome for me, I love to sleep!

3. We celebrated my mother in law's birthday on Sunday at a new restaurant by the harbor. Everything about the experience was enjoyable. It's going to be great having her live on this coast.

4. Leila and I had a pool day today while Jeff was home with Carson. She played in the kiddie pool with her friends while I got to sit in the sun and relax. What a way to kick off the weekend!

Not a bad week! Looking forward to dinner plans tomorrow night and just relaxing with the family.

The BIRTHDAY Great List [8.09.13}

This week was especially great because it was my BIRTHDAY! I have always loved celebrating my birthday, actually any birthday, I don't discriminate. But this year's number was BIG. Something about thirty-six seems so much scarier than thirty-five. Thirty-five was a novelty, thirty-six is just old.

The positive side is that I am happy to have lived 36 years, and plan on living many more great ones. This week's Great List is dedicated to sharing all the great things I did with my family and friends that helped make thirty-six a whole lot easier to welcome.

Sea World trip with my favorite girl. Not really birthday related, but still great to have some time with just Leila this week.
1. I started my birthday celebration with a trip to the mall to get my free Sephora birthday gift. This year one of the items was my favorite mascara from Benefit (They're Real!). Score!

2. Lauren surprised me by treating me (and Leila) to a pre-birthday dinner at California Pizza Kitchen after our shopping trip. During my pregnancy with Carson I wanted a Mojito so badly. I kicked off my birthday celebration with a drink that I haven't had in over a year.

3. Running is one of my favorite hobbies, but finding time to run isn't easy. After sleeping in a bit, (thanks, Jeff!) my sister and I went for run. I love that I can knock out three miles again now just 5ish months after having Carson. This exercise turned out to be more than necessary (see below).

4. Betsy always makes dessert for all our birthday celebrations. This year I got two varieties...the best Lemon Squares she's ever made, and a classic favorite, Coconut cookies. To top it off, Amy's dad made me my very own batch of his Almond Crescent cookies. When Amy and I were roommates I would ask her to hide these cookies from me because I can easily eat fifteen (don't judge) in one sitting (okay, standing).

5. Jeff and I decided not to exchange birthday gifts this year but I did get the gift of ME time. I spent three hours at the pool with my girlfriends. No kids, no strange Ergo tan lines, lots of champagne. Best gift ever.

6. I had one too many glasses of wine with a group of my mom-friends that evening at the Catamaran Hotel and Spa. I love that Lauren celebrated with me like it was her birthday too!

7. To end the BIG 3-6 celebration, Jeff and I went to Rocky's for dinner date on Monday night. I chose Rocky's for the beer and burgers, but mostly because it's a bar that we can't go to with the kids.

What a great birthday!

Thirty-six, get your fix. Thirty-six, get in the mix. Thirty-six, take some pics. I need good  rhyme for this year...

The Great List {07.26.13}

It's been way too long since I shared my Great List. Just because we've been crazy busy doesn't mean I haven't taken time to appreciate the little things that make me smile. I make a point to practice positive thinking almost daily. Got to find the good in life when you haven't slept more than fours hours in a row in over four months, right?

Leila (34 months) and Charlie (3 years old!!)
1. We helped Charlie celebrate her third birthday this week! I can't believe these girls aren't babies anymore. What's even crazier is that they have known each other for half of their life! We lived it up at her petting zoo themed birthday party, then on her actual birthday we went to dinner at a very kid friendly restaurant. Leila had so much fun she said she wants to go back for her birthday. It's a deal, Leila!

2. Carson rolled from back to belly this week. This is HUGE for him putting himself to sleep. He's a belly sleeper but rolls to his back and then gets "stuck" there with his arms flailing and legs kicking. In due time he'll be rolling all over the place.

3. I treated myself to an early birthday present! I purchased sixteen new pairs of underwear at Nordstrom's anniversary sale. Time for an underwear drawer overhaul after two pregnancies in three years.

4. It's been just gorgeous here in San Diego. Clouds in the morning and sun in the afternoon keeps the temperature at the beach in the low 70s. Just my kind of summer weather...you can't beat this beach breeze.

5. I am blogging again! It felt nice to take a break, even though it seemed to be a forced one. I blog to capture the moments and archive the memories we are making as a family. It started to worry me that this crazy time in our lives would be forgotten when we passed into the next stage. Making time to do what I love (writing, exercising, seeing friends) helps me enjoy these seemingly long days.

Happy Friday! Enjoy your fun summer weekends while they last.

The Great List {6.3.13}

June has officially started in San Diego. Like clockwork, the first few days of the month have been gray. June Gloom, as we call it, lasts the entire month. We usually see the sun at the beach just in time for the 4th of July, but not always. Oh, beach life...so rough. I actually, not-so-secretly, love the temperature at the beach in June.

See the sun on the sand? This picture was taken on May 31st.
1. When it does get sunny again, I am so excited to have this new tent. Costco rules! See Carson's head on the left side? (Kai was on the other side of Kennday.) Now the babies don't have to be in the car seat/stroller or in the carrier...we have a third option. Until he was ready to sleep, Carson was pretty cool about laying there. Just gotta work on keeping most of the sand out of the tent. Yeah right.

2. We got to see some old friends these past two weekends. So many friends that I started out with in San Diego moved away. Crazy people, huh? It was nice to see their smiling faces, even if it was just for a bit!

3. Carson had his 2 month check-up and shots (a few weeks late). He is 10 lbs 4 oz (10th percentile) and only 22 inches (5th percentile). Still tiny! He did alright with his shots but was a bit fussy even the next day. I bet his little legs hurt.

This is my last week of work! Enjoy your week!

The Great List {5.20.13}

It's Monday, the sun is shining, my house is in decent order, and it's been about a month since my last Great List...

Fun at Sea World yesterday
1. Work. It's great! It is keeping me sane and insane at the same time. I LOVE my job. I am savoring every last day until summer vacation and unemployment begins again. Teaching in California is tough these days, especially in my district where budget cuts keep impacting the classroom. Keeping my head high though and hoping for the best next year. This part-time gig is perfect for our family right now.

2. Local fun. Living in San Diego is nothing but awesome. Sure it may get over 80 at the beach for a week in the summer and tourists take over my town for a few months, but the local fun makes up for it. We have Sea World, the world famous San Diego Zoo, and the beach just minutes from our home. One of my favorite things to do is play tourist in my own town. Makes it seem like we are on vacation too!

3. Getting my groove back. I am finding time to exercise and it has really improved my outlook in general. Personally, exercise is my number one mood booster. Making it my priority helps keep me happy. So what if I have to pause the DVD 3-4 times to get Carson to go back to sleep at least the workout is getting done eventually.

4. Friends. We are so lucky to have play-dates almost everyday that I am not working. Leila needs it and so do I. (Carson could care less at this point, but when he's ready he has a BFF waiting!) The ladies I call friends are supportive, relaxed, understanding, funny, and just as crazy as me.

Ahhhhh. That felt good. No Great List doesn't mean nothing great happened, it just means life has taken over for the time being. I hope your week rocks!

The Great List {4.22.13}

I feel like I totally rocked this week...so who cares that this post is a day late. Gratitude should be a daily thing anyways!

1. I made it out of the house every morning with both kiddos...and twice before 9:30. It's getting easier everyday and even though I am tired, it's nothing coffee can't fix.

2. Our impromptu water day at the bay was the highlight of the week for both me and Leila. For me, it was stressful getting her cleaned up with limited supplies (towel!) and a baby strapped to me.  I didn't panic and asked for help when I needed it which is a big step for me.

3. I started purging our clutter and it feels amazing. Gotta have some control in this chaotic time, right? I love having photographs in frames lying around the house but our place is too cramped with baby accessories and toddler toys to have more than a few on the shelves. I also convinced Jeff to part with an outdated globe and an end table (although it made it out the door but that's about it).

4. I LOVE when people make us food. If you are wondering, it is not too late to send dinners our way. I mentioned before that we aren't eating until really late these days when I cook so the quiche Lauren made us allowed us to eat dinner (and lunch the next day) at a decent time.

I've got another busy week ahead. Looking forward to my last week off before I go back to work!

The Great List {04.15.13}

This week has already started off as a crazy one. Imagine lots of kids, rain, and being stuck indoors all morning. I guess crazy is the new normal around here. I swear I hardly remember what happened this past week. But...I DO remember the wonderful weekend we all had, so I'm going to focus on that.

1. Leila had a sleepover at her Aunt Val and Uncle Stefan's place on Saturday. Val came to get her by 9 am on Saturday and brought her home happy (and tired) just after noon on Sunday. Leila was in heaven. She ate chocolate cereal for breakfast, slept in a big bed with Aunt Val, had hours of pretend play, got a mani/pedi, went out to eat and to the park. Phew. Needless to say our apartment was very quiet with Leila gone. Fun weekend.

2. Jeff and I were able to get a lot done. I finally finished organizing the kids' closet. Huge improvement already! I just need to get some hooks and hang a shelf...well, Jeff does. Our apartment is so tiny I feel I have to constantly work on keeping it organized. It's easy to feel overwhelmed with all the stuff we have in this small space so finding time to organize is important.

3. A friend brought us lasagna for dinner Friday night. It was nice not having to cook dinner. Some nights when I cook we end up eating at 7:00 pm which doesn't work well with Leila's bedtime. There was even enough for leftovers! That made two nights this weekend that I didn't make dinner. It's the little things!

Hope you have a great week!

The Great List {4.08.13}

You might think it's strange that I love Mondays, but it's true. Jeff is usually off work and our beach town has settled down from the weekend. Time for a fresh start with lofty goals to conquer everything on my to-do list. It has been a great week and I am really proud of myself (and Jeff) for hanging in there and not going too crazy.

Photo by Natalie Chiles {San Diego Newborn and Family Photography}

 1. This guy doesn't like to be put down during the day, but I'm not complaining. Jeff and I each do our share of holding him while the other is playing with Leila or maintaining our home. I don't feel tied down like I did as a first time mom, not knowing what to expect. I realize soon enough he'll playing and exploring on his own.

2. I made it out of the house by MYSELF and the TWO KIDS. Three times! I feel like a rock star. We started slow with a short walk on the bay. I ended the week at the park for two whole hours. Now, if I cared how I looked (or smelled) I may not be as proud. Details, details.

3. Amy and I have encouraged ourselves to get into some sort of routine to help calm the toddlers. I am planning to cook more with Leila, create things and get crafty, and plan activities to get us out of the house even if it is for just a few hours. Time to hit Pinterest and waste some time on the internet. Fun!

I couldn't help but throw this other photo in of Carson from his newborn shoot back when he was one week old. Love!

The Great List {4.01.13}

It's Great List time!

Well, we made it through another week with a newborn and a toddler. I certainly couldn't have done it without help!

Jeff and our kids...every time we say kids it blows us away that we have TWO!

1. I have been lucky to have so much help during this adjustment period. Jeff, of course, steps up and makes sure Leila has everything she needs while I am busy with Carson. My parents, aunt, and uncle have been watching Leila a lot in the mornings. My mom has been coming to get Leila out of bed at 7:30 so I can start my day smoothly, without being pulled in too many directions. My friend Lauren took Leila to play with her daughter on Friday while Carson and I went to a doctor appointment. My aunt has been making us dinner and it's being delivered to us (and a bunch they froze for us too). My mom has been doing our laundry. The list goes on and on...

2. After a stressful few days, Carson has finally made it past his birth weight. We are nursing as often as possible during the day and I'm taking Fenugreek pills to help increase my supply. The doctor was pleased with his 4 oz weight gain in less than two days so she is officially not worried anymore. Phew!

3. I made it to the beach this weekend! We live so close and do not take advantage of it like we should. My dad and uncle stayed home with Carson and just us girls spent some time with our toes in the sand. It was so relaxing.

4. I have to say good-bye to my mom, dad, Aunt Carrie, and Uncle Pat today after THREE wonderful months of them living less than a mile away at "The Beach House". A lot has happened since they arrived, and although it will be tough to say good-bye, I am so grateful they were here. Next year they are staying even longer...hooray!

I hope you take time this week to step back and reflect on what's GREAT in your life!

The Great List {3.25.13}

Happy Monday! Starting off the week with some gratitude is the best way for me to start fresh. Bringing home Carson has been a pretty smooth transition thanks to all the help I've had. Of course it has not been free of challenges, but today I prefer to focus on what is going well.

1.  This girl celebrated her half birthday on the 22nd. It was fun to listen to her tell everyone it was her half birthday and adorable to hear her sing, "Happy birthday to me..." Leila loves her sweets (just like mom) and her chocolate cupcake face made everyone laugh.

2.  Jeff was off work most of this week, thank goodness. He kept Leila entertained while I tended to Carson's needs. We were both so giddy the first few days home with him and Leila. Such a great feeling!

3.  We had a successful and relaxing newborn photo shoot with a local San Diego newborn photographer, Natalie Chiles. She spent a lot of time getting just the right shots of Carson and the four of us. I was blown away by the "sneak peek" photo she posted on Facebook and cannot wait to see more.

4.  Physically, I am feeling GREAT! I am surprised at how good I feel compared to my previous experience. Thanks to all the help I've been getting I am pretty well rested right now too. I'll take what I can get, if it won't last forever.

The BABY-IS-HERE Great List {3.18.13}

This Monday I am feeling so much better than I was last week.  Although I was able to be grateful for my pregnancy, having Carson here to complete our family is really the greatest feeling of all.

Leila holding Carson for the first time
Carson made his appearance at 4:23 pm on March 14th after a long, but relaxed day (thanks to the epidural that actually worked this time).  He is 7 lbs 3 oz and 19.5 inches long and must feel like a celebrity because of all the photos taken of him.

This week's great list...in photos:

... a wonderful capacity to appreciate again and again, freshly and naively, the basic goods of life, with awe, pleasure, wonder, and even ecstasy.

The PREGNANCY Great List {3.11.13}

As this pregnancy comes to a close (hopefully sooner than later) I figured it was time to share all that I was grateful for these past 40 weeks.  The end of pregnancy is less than glamorous.  Mine has been filled with complaints, pains, and a general bad attitude.  But the reality is, these past months have been pretty darn good!

Off to a dinner date with Jeff and Leila last night.
1.  I feel so lucky that it was easy (maybe too easy!) to get pregnant again this time.  Although it surprised the crap out of us, the fact that we didn't have to stress about getting pregnant again is something I do not take for granted.

2.  My biggest concern this time around has been my weight gain and my blood pressure.  Both were through the roof last time!  I am happy to report my blood pressure is normal, as is my weight gain.  I tried to stay healthy and active during these past months.  Besides some extra indulgences these past 2-3 weeks I have stayed on track.

3.  Leila has been quite a distraction during this pregnancy and starting back to work two days a week during this last trimester has been helpful too.  It's been nice to stay busy, active, and not so consumed with this pregnancy. (Although at this point it is all I think about!)

4.  Sleeping has been a dream!  Aside from a few nights that I had trouble falling asleep, I have been getting plenty of rest at night and waking up feeling GREAT! Maybe it's got a lot to do with #3...I am so busy!

5.  We have received more gifts than I ever imagined getting for a second baby.  Carson not only has new clothes, he has a ton of hand-me-downs to wear until after his first birthday.  Thanks everyone!

Hopefully #6 can be a smooth and easy on-time delivery.  That will really be the icing on the cake!

The Great List {3.04.13}

It's Monday...time for another edition of The Great List.

1.  Leila is completely potty-trained!  We have had NO issues and can count on her to tell us when she needs to use the bathroom.  It may not have been the easiest task to conquer at 8 months pregnant, but I'm happy it is behind us!

2.  My to-do list is shrinking, and yes, I did take the advice of my friends and packed my hospital bag, even though all my to-do items aren't checked off my list yet.  Jeff has been able to mark off a few items from his list too.  My parents, aunt, and uncle have been a huge help by taking Leila, washing baby items, preparing freezer meals, etc.

3.  Carson got even more spoiled this week thanks to the lovely ladies at work.  They threw me a small baby shower after school Thursday evening.  It was so nice to catch up over some great food and even more fun looking at all the adorable baby items they got for Carson.  Next time we get together like that I will be enjoying a glass of wine with them!

What was great about your week?

The Great List {2.25.13}

I may be in the minority here, but I really love Mondays.  I love a fresh start and I love routines (something our weekends have been lacking).  Like all weeks, this one had its ups and downs, but focusing on the positive helps me move on and let go.

Toddler artwork on my fridge makes me happy.
1.  The best part of my week was meeting my BFF's new baby boy, Kai.  Talking to Amy about how GOOD she was feeling now that she was no longer pregnant really helped my over-hormonal mood.  Kai is so tiny and squishy.  I loved holding him and watching his big sister show her affection to him too.  Being pregnant sucks, but we all know the end result it worth it!

2.  I'm in full nesting mode over here.  My mom, aunt, and I spent Saturday washing baby toys, books, the car seat, and checking to-do items off my list. There is still more to do, but as the list gets shorter I know that the last thing on my list is getting closer...packing my hospital bag.  Can't wait!

3.  My sister was gone for over a week visiting our new nephew and rest of our family back in Chicago.  I was so jealous she was able to spend some uninterrupted time with out sister and Jaxon but hearing how great they are both doing made me feel better.  We spent yesterday on the balcony catching up while catching some rays.  Sunshine and sister talk was another "I-am-so-over-this-pregnancy" mood buster.

Enjoy your week!

The Great List {02.18.13}

It's nice to get a fresh start to the week.  Letting go of all the chaos, and focusing on the joy helps me start the week off right!

See-food anyone?  What can I say, I still think she's cute even with food in her mouth!

1.  San Diego has been having the best weather lately.  I love winters here because it can get really warm for a bit and then a few days later it feels like "winter" again.  Leila and I finally made it to our favorite park two days this week. The park use to be a staple in our weekly routine, but lately we've been too busy with family and work to hang out there. I could really tell she missed it!  She was all over the placing...the swings, climbing, digging in the sand...it was even warm enough to play with our feet in the water!

2.  My friend Amy had her baby boy this week!  She has yet to publicly share any details, so I'll just keep it at that.  My turn is next!

3.  Jeff's had a surprise day off this Thursday, a work day for me.  He spent the day with her and was EXHAUSTED by the time I got home.  It was very validating to hear that he thought staying home with her all day was hard work.  He had to take a nap mid-day and then felt a sense of relief when she was finally in bed.  Two is a busy age!

The Great List {02.11.13}

Happy Monday!  This post is a little late because we've been BUSY doing some great things!

1. We had a party Saturday to celebrate this little guy with friends and family.  Lauren hosted the small gathering complete with delicious food, sweets, and decorations.  Carson got spoiled with all the gifts!  My favorite part was reading all the wishes people wrote for him.  One to fill out was "I wish you grow..." and most people responded, "taller than Jeff."

2. Amy and I sold most of our baby girl clothes at two local consignment stores. It feels good to have that DONE.  No more baby girls in this house!

3. We started going to Teacher Lee's Play to Learn Preschool a year ago.  Because of my new work schedule we haven't been able to attend for almost two months. Luckily she has just opened up a Monday class that we can go to.  Leila loves Teacher Lee and I love what she does for San Diego families.

4. Nesting hit me hard this week.  I organized Carson's dresser full of all his washed clothes, re-organized and purged items from the downstairs closet, and helped Jeff rearrange the kids' room...complete with bunk beds!  It feels so good to have that done.  My list is still long, but nothing left will take us full DAYS to complete.
