Six weeks before the birth of my first child, Leila, I clearly remember my friend Bridget talking candidly with me about breastfeeding. Her words stuck with me and have become my go-to words to newly breastfeeding mothers. She said, "...For something "natural", it doesn't seem natural at first."
For my first experience, those words couldn't have been more true.
Breastfeeding was something I always planned on doing. When I was pregnant with my daughter Leila I read breastfeeding books, researched online, and talked to friends and family members about their experiences. I thought I was fully prepared for our breastfeeding journey...then I had a baby.
Read my full story over on Sarah's blog, Nurse Loves Farmer. While you're there you can read other mothers' stories about breastfeeding. The Breastfast Club has featured many bloggers and has turned into a valuable breastfeeding resource for new and seasoned moms.

Our family of four
It seems like a really long time ago that Natalie Chiles, a local San Diego Newborn Photographer, took these amazing photos of our family of four.
It's been FOUR months since we welcomed Carson into our family.
We have all changed and grown so much since March. Leila has been showing more interest in her little brother. She no longer needs to sit on top of me while he nurses and loves to make him laugh.
I don't feel crazy anymore, but am quickly remembering with the passing of one challenging stage comes another. Jeff is feeling more adjusted too! He is a self-proclaimed baby-hater (Okay, that may be too harsh...but true nonetheless.) and is looking forward to a stage when Carson is more interactive.
Looking back at these photos reminds me how happy I am that we got them taken. Natalie made us feel so comfortable during this shoot. She took time before Carson was born to check out my sister's apartment to make sure the lighting would work and sent me countless emails with questions and ideas to ensure we'd be thrilled with our photos.
The photo shoot lasted a couple hours, with a nursing break, lunch break, and clothing change for some of us. We hung out and chatted as a family on the couch while she took some candid shots, then she patiently waited for Carson to fall asleep for the shots of just him. I know Natalie was as excited as I was to get this photo (and many others) of Carson smiling.

I love that when you Google "Natalie Chiles", this is one of the images that comes up.
To top off our experience, Natalie came over and shared the newborn photos with us personally. She wanted to see our reactions in person! That really proved to Jeff and I that she was proud of her beautiful work. As you can tell by the pictures, she should be! My only regret...not having her take photos of Leila as a newborn.

Natalie recently took newborn photos for a friend of mine and I can't wait to see how they turned out.
Check out Natalie's blog here for more photos, craft ideas, and recipes. You can be sure I'll be begging her to do a family shoot for us in the future.

Six weeks later {Postpartum life}
If you could see the half-folded laundry on the couch or the dishes in the sink, this would be the perfect photo describing our life the past six weeks.
Toddler meltdown. Smiling baby.
Someone is always crying, fussing, or whining (this includes the adults). Toys and baby gear are scattered about. Chores are half finished. The television is on the Disney Jr. channel. Someone is eating. Always.
It's crazy. At times the crazy drives me crazy. Other times I can go with the flow and not stress out. Wine helps. Getting out of the house helps. Knowing that "this too shall pass" helps.
I am excited to go back to work and to begin an exercise routine. I have my 6 week postpartum check-up tomorrow and my maternity leave is officially over on Tuesday. I am ready to slowly get my body back, wear regular clothes, do my hair and make-up, and spend time fueling my passion for teaching.
I'll be training for a 5K, using the well-known Couch to 5K program, for a fun run this July. I know it will take time to lose the last 15 pounds (yikes!), especially when I plan to be nursing Carson as long as I possibly can.
I also plan to BE KIND to myself and not hate on my body during this process. This is it. No more kids. No rush to get back into shape before the next baby. My plan is to go back to my healthy and active lifestyle, whatever that may look like with all the new changes in my life.
You bet I am still wearing maternity pant! My pooch is way worse without the panel sucking me in.
Six weeks later...
- I am still sweating at night.
- My deodorant is no longer doing it's job during the day either, but Jeff''s is.
- I am starving but having trouble finding time to eat, grocery shop, and prepare meals.
- My hair is always in a pony-tail.
- I've had one pedicure.
- I am not nearly as tired as I thought I would be (despite the tired look on my face in the picture).
- And the laundry still doesn't do itself.
- Carson has only peed on me once but in his own face twice.
- We leave the house daily.
- I love rocking my baby to sleep.
- I STILL need a new blog name.

I'm getting in the picture
Back in October I wrote about my biggest mistake as a rookie mom, as well as a list of other things I plan to do differently this time around. (Surprise! I'm not totally failing at this!) I am a work in progress and I am slowly learning to let go of control.
A friend sent me some encouraging words when I was having a particularly rough day. She told me to lower my expectations for at least the first month. I took these words to heart and am pleased with myself today that my kids are both safe and fed today. Yep, that's about all I am going to expect from myself today. Maybe tomorrow (or next week) I will add to my short list of expectations (a shower would be nice).
This guy got circumcised on Tuesday. Yikes! Boy moms, why didn't anyone warn me about this?!
The biggest mistake I made as a first time mom was not being in photos the days, weeks, even months after Leila was born. I was extremely unhappy with how I looked after I put on a whopping 50 pounds of baby weight. Later, I was even more unhappy that I had two pictures of me and her together (both of terrible quality) when she was a newborn.
Although the opportunity hasn't been presented very often for me to jump in front of the camera, I am not afraid of getting my picture snapped. I'm even less afraid of posting it on the internet for everyone to see. (I even plan to print this one for Carson's baby book.)
I'm not doing it for me. I'm doing it for them. I love seeing old pictures of my mother and no matter what she's wearing or when she last showered, I always think she is beautiful. I can only hope Leila and Carson will feel the same way about me.

I should have expected...
I expected to remember everything about the newborn and postpartum stage. It's true, I was completely sleep deprived during this stage with Leila and time has a funny ways of erasing the not-so-great memories from our minds.
But still, I should have expected...
- Blow-out poops in the middle of the night.
- Postpartum night sweats that leave me feeling hot, freezing, and soaking wet at the same time.
- Nursing a newborn to start to feel a little like Groundhog day...over and over again.
- A roller coaster of emotions to hit me at any time without any warning.
- Clothing not to feel or look right on my shrinking belly and growing breasts.
- Random, meaningless cries and grunts coming from Carson to wake (and worry) me at night.
- Getting out of the house would take twice as long as it use to.
- To feel a little lost in the chaos and lack of routine.
- Changing a diaper on a wiggly newborn would take two people.
- All the laundry.
What else did I forget about this crazy stage? Please warn me before it's too late!

Newborns {Sleep tip of the month}
I think it's only fitting that my sleep tip this month be focused on newborns as the arrival of Jen's second baby, Carson, is just around the corner! I look forward to being able to help Jen get little C sleeping like a champ.
Newborns don't know night from day, so you will have to help them learn the difference.
During the day...
During the night...

Newborns don't know night from day, so you will have to help them learn the difference.
During the day...
- Keep the curtains open and the lights on when he's awake.
- Get outside when the weather is nice - research has shown that exposure to sunlight during the day helps babies sleep better at night (this won't be hard since we live in a city with 321 sunny days each year!)
- Feed him every 3 hours - even if you have to wake him up.
During the night...
- Pull down the shades, dim the lights.
- Switch to quiet activities, like massage, quiet reading or singing.
- Keep nighttime feedings brief and boring.
I feel so lucky knowing Lauren will be here to help me get Carson on the right track with his sleep!
